Colonel (Ret) David H. Sammons, Jr.
Colonel (Ret) David H. Sammons, Jr. currently serves as the Senior Aerospace Science Instructor for Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) at Sanderson High School, in Raleigh, NC.
Colonel Sammons entered the Air Force in 1981 through the AFROTC program at Angelo State University in San Angelo, TX. He served 28 years in the Air Force and has experience leading units in peacetime and combat conditions.
In 2004 he commanded the 55th Electronic Combat Group while providing specialized EC-130H COMPASS CALL aircraft in both Iraq and Afghanistan wars. In 2001 he commanded the 15th Special Operations Squadron's daring airdrop of the 75th Ranger Regiment in Afghanistan as part of the U.S.-led response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. For his actions he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Bronze Star medals.In 1999, he was the Air Force recipient of the Lt General Tunner Award for an airlift mission he commanded to stem American bloodshed in Liberia. Additionally, he worked four-years as a Presidential Advance Agent responsible for the movement of the President aboard Air Force One. Lastly, Col Sammons served three-years as the Professor of Aerospace Studies for AFROTC at NC State University in Raleigh, NC.
Colonel Sammons has earned two Master's Degrees in Counseling and National Security and Strategic Studies. He completed Squadron Officer School as a Distinguished Graduate, Army Command & General Staff College, Air War College, and the Naval War College in residence.
Colonel Sammons is a Master Navigator with over 4,600 hours flying MC-130E/H, C-130E/H, and EC-130H aircraft. His significant military decorations include the Legion of Merit with one oak leaf cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal with five oak leaf clusters, Air Medal, Aerial Achievement Medal, Gallant Unit Citation, AF Outstanding Unit Award with Valor, Kosovo Campaign Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, and Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary and Service Medals.
Colonel Sammons is married to the former Rene London and has three sons Joshua, Nathan, and Kyle.
